Ann Arbor Film Festival - Our Mission The Ann Arbor Film Festival showcases independent and experimental film and video. Established in 1963, this internationally-renowned festival is the oldest of its kind in North America. Each year the festival attracts entries from moving image artists worldwide and screens more than 100 films before audiences during six days in March. This year the festival runs from March 20 through March 25 at the Michigan Theater.

The Ann Arbor Film Festival fosters the growth of emerging and established film and videomakers. The festival is open to film and video of all categories that demonstrate a high regard for the medium as an art form. The festival’s mission is to provide a worldwide public forum for moving image exhibitions, to encourage and showcase artists of the moving image, to promote the film as an art, and to offer educational outreach.

Arab Film Festival - one of the nation's first official Arab Film Festivals. A celebration of Arab cinema and culture and testimony to the strength of community action.

California College of the Arts - offers a film/video program that integrates the theory and practice of film, video and digital arts, with emphasis on practical and critical studies in the intersectioning areas of experimental, dramatic and documentary traditions.

Canyon Cinema - a San Francisco based organization of filmmakers dedicated to the distribution, promotion, education and preservation of film as an art form.

Center for Asian American Media - The Center for Asian American Media is a non-profit organization
dedicated to presenting stories that convey the richness and diversity
of Asian American experiences to the broadest audience possible. We do
this by funding, producing,distributing and exhibiting works in film,
television and digital media.

Cine Accion - the nation's oldest Latino media arts organization, which promotes the production, exhibition and distribution of Latino and Chicano film. Cine Acción also produces the annual Festival Cine Latino! film festival which takes place in the Bay Area each September.

Film Arts Foundation - is dedicated to supporting the creation, exhibition and distribution of independent film and video. Founded in 1976 by a handful of filmmakers, FAF now has over 3,400 members working in film, video and multimedia, and is the largest regional organization of independent producers in
the country.

Frameline - is the nation's only comprehensive non-profit organization dedicated to the exhibition, distribution, promotion and funding of lesbian and gay film and video. Each year Frameline presents the San Francisco International Lesbian & Gay Film Festival, the world's oldest and largest event of its kind. Frameline brings films and videos to communities across the country through Frameline Distribution and provides financial support to film and videomakers through the Tzabaco/Frameline Film & Video Completion Fund.

Headlands Center for the Arts - a laboratory for creativity where artists are given time and space to experiment, collaborate and develop new work in a breathtaking natural setting.

MadCat Women's International Film Festival - committed to showcasing women filmmakers and videomakers who challenge the use of sound and image and explore notions of visual story telling. MadCat sets itself apart from other women's festivals by curating its programs thematically and thus accepting a range of films about many different issues.

Pacific Film Archive - internationally recognized center for the exhibition and study of cinema. Through its daily film and video collection, and study resources, the PFA is committed to increasing the understanding and appreciation of the art of cinema.

San Francisco Art Institute - promotes creation of experimental films that are unrelated to commercial film-making. Students are trained to be creative thinkers, to pursue artistic excellence and to see a project through from idea to finished piece.

San Francisco Arts Commission - local civic agency that champions the arts in San Francisco. Its programs integrate the arts (architecture, landscape architecture, and the performing, visual, literary and media arts) into all aspects of city life.

San Francisco Arts Online - a monthly magazine featuring the most comprehensive listing of arts and cultural events in San Francisco.

San Francisco Jewish Film Festival - the world's first, largest and most prestigious event of its kind, with an annual audience of 34,000. SFJFF showcases contemporary Jewish-subject films from around the world, building bridges between communities and heightening awareness of the diversity of secular Jewish culture.

San Francisco State University Cinema Department - founded amid the political activism and artistic experimentation of the 1960's, committed to a curriculum which recognizes cinemato be an independent, powerful and unique medium in the world.

Southern Exposure - a non-profit artists' organization located in San Francisco's Mission District at historic Project Artaud. Member artists play an integral role in the organization's policy and planning.

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts - presents art and entertainment reflecting the San Francisco Bay Area's diverse cultural populations. Presentations by local, national and international artists engage patrons who appreciate the positive contributions of the many cultural communities of the Bay Area.

ARTIST RESOURCES

Bright Lights Film Journal - a popular-academic hybrid of movie analysis, history, and commentary, looking at classic and commercial, independent, exploitation, and international film from a wide range of vantage points from the aesthetic to the political. A prime area of focus is on the connection between capitalist society and the images that reflect, support, or subvert itÛmovies as propaganda. Published quarterly in San Francisco by Gary Morris and Gregory Battle.

Filmlinc - Web site of the Lincoln Center Film Society. Sponsors the annual fall New York Film festival, which includes Views from the Avant Garde. Program entry information is online.The site also has online applications for the Grand Marnier Fellowships 2000. The deadline to apply for one of the three $5000 fellowships is August 1, 2000. Graduate students working in filmmaking, video or critical writing and who are enrolled in an educational institution in the United States (other than California or Texas) are eligible.

Flicker - site maintained by local film and video maker Scott Stark that offers a variety of resources for film and video artists including a gallery of film and video stills, links to alternative cinema showcases and artists' web sites, and Scott's pick of the "10 best experimental films and videos" for the past 2 years.

Other Cinema - website for Craig Baldwin's ongoing series of unusual and experimental film in San Francisco. Online schedule of shows screened every Saturday at 8:30 at 992 Valencia, San Francisco, and a gallery of recent and upcoming experimental works by local Bay Area artists, including QuickTime previews as well as commentaries by the featured artists.

Video Activist Network (VAN) - an informal association of activists and politically conscious artists using video to support social, economic and environmental justice campaigns. VAN is facilitated by Whisper Media, a collective that promotes the use of video, and other media tools, in progressive grassroots movements. VAN offers screenings in the San Francisco Bay Area that highlight recent local political demonstrations, works by VAN members, and hard-hitting activist videos.
