This program is presented in dialog with YBCA’s exhibition Office Space, examining the 21st Century trend of immaterial labor and contemporary work place aesthetics in the context of a globalized economy. Opening with parts 1 & 2 of Living In the World, the infamous Joe (“Take This Job and Shove It”) Gibbons’ 1985 Super-8mm self-portrait of wage slavery, unemployment and desperate living, these films examine the aesthetics of office space and the dematerialized nature of contemporary cultural production. Robert Todd’s 16mm Office Suite reflects “daily cycles of focus, frustration, relaxation, and madness” found in the artist’s administrative work place. Laure Prouvost’s We Know We Are Just Pixels enacts imagined outreach from dematerialized denizens of cloud storage data havens. Similarly plumbing the depths of the digital archive, two Webinars by Andrew Norman Wilson—Network Logic and Anxiety About Relationships—deploy Pond5 stock footage to dramatize the (con)fusion of work time and playtime as the banality of prefab corporate aesthetics. Finally, program concludes with Ryan Trecartin’s globalized CEO drag show K-CoreaINC. K (section a), an insanely delirious portrait of the corporate overlord ruling class as fast-living, jet-setting, power-meeting party people train- (and plane-) wrecking on a road to nowhere.
