In addition to its decades-long history of film/video exhibitions, San Francisco Cinematheque has long supported the field of avant-garde/experimental artist-made film by creating publications and maintaining a publicly accessible research Archive. Esoteric, hermetic, obscure and important, Cinematheque’s archive contains published and unpublished documents, curatorial and artist files, visual materials, ephemera and moving images. Beyond mere reliquary, this archive serves as a space of discourse, feeding contemporary curatorial work, scholarship and artistic creation. It is an ever-growing, ever-accumulating, always open fragment of a largely under-recognized field.
Join Cinematheque at the SF-inaugural edition of UNTITLED, an international, curated art fair (founded in 2012) that focuses on curatorial balance and integrity across all disciplines of contemporary art. In its engagement with UNTITLED, Cinematheque will present a curated exhibition of materials drawn from this Archive, intended to open a conversation between experimental film and the visual fine arts. This interactive display of visual and textual materials will provide a cross-sectional snapshot of Cinematheque’s Archive and exhibition history and will provide a window on the vast community of artists represented by Cinematheque over its 55+ year history. It will celebrate the work of countless film artists working beyond the pale of conventional gallery and institutionally supported artistic practice. This archival sample will document five decades of Cinematheque’s curatorial work and will include rare historical film/video work selected from Cinematheque’s VHS and DVD archives. A curated selection of work screened at recent CROSSROADS film festivals will be screened on installed monitors with the entire exhibit available for active browsing by UNTITLED’s visitors and participants.
