Die Nacht (1985) by Hans-Jürgen Syberberg, with Edith Clever and music by Bach and Wagner. Syberberg (Our Hitler, Parsifal) has made his most minimal and yet one of his most ambitious works. Die Nacht is a marathon (5 1/2 hour) one-woman show featuring Edith Clever alone on stage as she delivers a bravura performance. Her elegant, eloquent monologue is a swan song for European culture, drawn from Goethe, Holderlin and Kleist as well as Syberberg’s own remembrances. Die Nacht was first performed as a two-day stage piece; the film premiered on the 41st anniversary of the end of World War Il.
