Becoming American

A Kaleidoscope of the 90's

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

The United States is a country built by immigrants. What does it mean to be an American in the 90’s? As part of California College of Arts and Crafts’ symposium “Immigration and Cultural Identity” (November 6-12), we offer five views of people struggling to reconcile and reflect on past cultures: The Mexican Tapes (excerpt, Louis Hock); Mnemonic Study: Ellis Island Fragment (Joel Katz); Itam Hakim, Hopiit (Victor Masayesva, Jr.); ASSIMULATION/a simulation (Windy Chien); One Of A Kind (Patrick Yip).
