Mexico South

Videos from and near Chiapas

Yerba Buena Center for the Arts

Presented/curated by award-winning documentarian, Maureen Gosling, former partner of Les Blank and who is currently completing a feature, filmed in Mexico. This program of shorts represents four different contemporary visions of southern Mexico: Las Ollas de San Marcos by indigenous (Huave) videomaker Teofila Palafox, on Zapotec village women making large clay pots; A Skirt Full of Butterflies by Gosling and Ellen Osbourne, on the hearty, spirited and legendary Isthmus Zapotec women; No Hay Vuelta Atras by Soco Aguilar, which documents in an original way the Mexican public’s reaction to the 1994 Zapatista uprising; and Prado Pacaya by Carlos Martinez Suarez, on Mayan farmers of Chiapas returning to their village to find it has been destroyed by the military.
