In 1971, Brakhage was commissioned to make three films in Pittsburgh, the purpose being to get a sensitive camera eye into places not traditionally open to personal documentation. What emerged was a trilogy of some of Brakhage’s most powerful work and landmarks of American avant-garde film. eyes: “I was at last permitted to ride in a Pittsburgh police car,” a film mostly edited in-the-camera; Deus Ex: “open heart surgery seen as equivalent to Aztec ritual sacrifice” Act of Seeing… title from the Greek autopsy: transforms a difficult visual taboo subject into an intensely visual and immediate experience.
