Fetish Footage and other desert lights
Willie Varela is a film lyricist who sings beneath the clear West Texas skies in El Paso. He is a romantic who transforms elements of his daily living into rich visionary experiences in more than forty super-8 films made over the last 12 years. As an arts activist he has created somewhat of an oasis where many of our leading filmmakers have shown their films; it in turn has contributed to his growth as an artist. Varela returns to San Francisco with a program of films completed since his last visit two years ago:
Fetish Footage 15 min. – ‘shot in one evening in late summer 1981, after a long period of fooling around with some old black and white 8mm footage of some ‘girlie’ or ‘nudie’ footage… they were so weird and lusciously vulgar.
Seven Short Super 8 Films – Exploratorium, Shadow of Doubt, Anywhere is Paradise, Kurt Kren, Stan and Jane Brakhage, The Last Look 18 min.
Light Journals 1-10 35 min. – “a series of short films that evolved over a period of 3 or 4 years. All of them deal with light, …in a different, and sometimes ‘tentative’ way.
In addition some other short works, titles TBA.
