New Super-8 Films from Vienna

Filmmaker Lisl Ponger will be present

SAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE

800 Chestnut Street

San Francisco, CA, 94133

Tonight’s program features 3 Viennese filmmakers, Peter Tscherkassky, Dietmar Brehm and Lisl Ponger, who share a commitment to super-8. Their films reflect a typically Austrian interest in work that exhibits a conscious engagement with the medium, although the emphasis has shifted from the strictly conceptual approach of the 70s towards an integration of structure and content. Ponger’s films weave picturewebs with multiple levels of meaning; Tscherkassky re-works the filmic space of the picture frame; Brehm reacts to the picture environment with a critique of destruction. The program is co-sponsored with the Goethe Institute of San Francisco and is made possible by the Austrian Institute and the Consulate General of Austria.
