SAN FRANCISCO ART INSTITUTE

800 Chestnut Street

San Francisco, CA, 94133

With Madeleine Malthete-Méliès in person. Piano accompaniment by Eric Leguen. 16 films (ca. 1900-5, approx. 75 min.), including The Man with the India Rubber Head, The Witch (color), The Diabolical Tenant (color), and others.

A special of previously unavailable prints by the great turn of the century French magician and pioneer film fantasist (A Trip to the Moon, etc.). The first filmmaker to tell a story, Méliès wrote, starred-in, and conceived the elaborate devices and sets of his more than 500 films. The films are remarkable for their visual wit and splendor as well as documents of a forgotten culture. Mme Méliès is the granddaughter of the filmmaker and has spent over 10 years collecting remaining prints of his films from archives throughout the world. Different programs of Méliès films will be presented at the Pacific Film Archive on Tuesday, November 16th, and at 80 Langston Street on Friday, November 19th.
