Tonight’s program presents several films and tapes formed as puzzles, playing with narration, memory, and sound/word/image relationships. Michael Guccione’s Coupled Entries (1988) is loosely based on Bram Stoker’s Dracula, but becomes a complex weave of rebus like visual puns, social criticism and personal experience; John Adams’ Sensible Shoes (1983) is a bizarre stream-of-conscious narrative constructed from a crossword puzzle; and Bill Chayes’ Equal Time (1987) is a “mock ‘how-to’ tape, delivering a payload of irony, declaring that control is the meaning beneath emptied images.”—Steve Seid
