Johan van der Keuken has frequently been compared with Chris Marker and Dutch compatriot Joris Ivens in having significantly expanded the possibilities of documentary or essayistic cinema. His films are exceptional in the range of their ideas and expressiveness: political though not dogmatic, equally sensitive to composition and the implications of recorded interviews. Tonight’s program: Herman Slobbe/Blind Child 2 (1966), a portrait of a blind boy’s distilled reality, and The Flat Jungle (1978), an indictment of the ecological devastation of the Dutch marshlands. Van der Keuken’s The Eye Above the Wellis featured in the S.F. International Film Festival this week.
