Since the early 1970s, in films by many women, there is a dominance of a visual style which uses personal, autobiographical subject matter and a complex montage of fragmentation of images and sounds. A few of the most inventive are constructed in a manner closer to music or poetry than to prose narrative, and they are the product of a woman’s experience. In recent feminist film theory, questions of a “female voice” in film have been raised. This selection of short films poses a question: Can one argue for a uniquely feminist or feminine voice with lyrical, personal films such as these? (S.B.) Programmed by Stephanie Beroes.
