The Devil Never Sleeps by Lourdes Portillo

San Francisco Art Institute

Cinematheque proudly welcomes San Francisco filmmaker Lourdes Portillo for the World Premiere of her feature El Diablo Nunca Duerme (The Devil Never Sleeps). Begun as Portillo’s investigation into the violent death of an uncle in her native Chihuahua, Mexico, El Diablo becomes a portrait of her own past, Mexican culture and the irrational forces working on both sides of the border. Portillo’s previous work (Las Madres…, Columbus On Trial) has been divided between documentary and fiction, but El Diablo mines the intersections of fact and fiction, analysis and autobiography, local myths and truths stranger than Mexican telenovellas.
